You can use a thanks system and apply only to topics and you'll need to make more changes so its only for the user and to not interfere with others.

Or the ideal would be to use a premium extension called Post Bookmark, that basically adds a Star icon (similar to your asterisk idea) and enables every user to mark any post as bookmarked so you can see later in time on your UCP. So it is only for the user. The only change you need to make is to change to show to only the 1st post, so its a pretty simple change. (but you'll need to purchase one of their themes to get acess to the extension, but well, its the most easy way to acheive what you want quickly)
