Thank you for the comment BRF.
Let's not waste time over alternative terms used across so many programming langauges for the same thing. As a C programmer since 1986, an Oracle developer since 1990, and a web designer since 1995, I am content that we are talking about an interface feature which permits both data entry (commonly known as a text box) but which also permits selection from a list (the data source is irrelevant), exactly in line with your final two sentences, a form of combo-box or listbox.
I'm glad that you now know what I'm talking about.
Yes, indeed I was very surprised to see that the erroneous entries were coming from the browser: especially as caching of usernames (or logins if want an alternative form) was not enabled in my case. However, removing a broader caching option has removed them.
If i were a designer of the pphpBB engine, I would not display the list of usernames in any case: it is arguably detrimental to security, and would advise a simple textbox require the typing of the username. Maybe they'll do that eventually.
I trust that you eventually managed to locate the phpbbcli.php utility in your system, and so to confirm that those items were part of phpBB??
I'm happy to close this topic now.
