these groups are not appearing in the user's profile when I go to the "Users" section. I only see a list of "Registered Users." As a result, I have to manually assign users to groups through the admin panel.

The user's profile is only showing the groups the user is a member of. Normally, you would have to assign a user's groups in the ACP in Manage Groups or Manage Users. Group leaders can also add users to their group in their UCP. Users can add themselves to an Open group in their UCP.
